Animal Control Officer (Police Department)

STARTING PAY RATE: $29.81 - $33.44 per hour based on a 40-hour workweek. Salary dependent on qualifications. The salary range for this position is $29.81 - $44.31. This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement available on our website.

JOB SUMMARY:This positon works in the Special Operations Division Traffic Unit and is responsible for the enforcement of all animal related ordinances and provides a variety of other animal related services to the community that do not require officer status. This position educates the public on the importance of animal control and safety and assists other Department members with animal related calls for service.
To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will need to effectively communicate to a full range of people, inside and outside the organization. We are looking to add a team member with the capacity to understand and be sensitive to the feelings of others.
JOB DUTIES:1. Patrols the Village and determines the most appropriate method to capture and remove animals that are endangering citizens or other animals or causing damage to property.
2. Responds to animal calls and attempts to locate the owner of problem domestic animals and determines if an animal should be impounded.
3. Enforces local and county ordinances, and state laws that relate to animals, issuing citations when appropriate. Conducts investigations on cruelty reports and other animal complaints. Testifies at village compliance hearings and potentially court.
4. Completes and reviews all applicable reports and logs in regard to animal control.
5. Maintains and checks animal traps to be used on properties that are experiencing animal nuisance problems.
6. Prepares purchase requests related to animal equipment and stray animal costs. Maintains records and ensures billing for impounded animals is completed on time.
7. Maintains all animal control equipment and ensures it is in proper working condition.
8. May serve as a Community Service Officer and provides training/guidance to CSO’s on animal control and other CSO related functions. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education equivalent to a high school diploma.
2. A minimum of one year of experience as a Community Service Officer or Police Auxiliary Officer.
3. CPR certification preferred or ability to obtain within six months of date of hire.
4. Certified Animal Control Officer (Level I and Level II) from the National Animal Control Association (NACA) or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
5. Possession of a valid driver’s license.
6. Proficiency with current computer software systems, including email, calendar programs, job specific software, and customer service systems preferred or within the first six months of employment.
