The mission of Downtown Oak Park (DTOP) is to promote business development and expansion of Oak Park’s central business district. Our Corporation, in all its efforts, encourages a spirit of cooperation and the maintenance of high business standards among its Members. Downtown Oak Park, as a partner agency of the Village of Oak Park, works cooperatively with the local government and other local agencies to make Downtown Oak Park a great place to shop, dine, work, play and live.
The Executive Director is an inspirational leader who provides operational and executive expertise to the organization and the community. The Executive Director represents the organization to the public, business and property owners and community organizations, leads organizational development and strategic planning, provides guidance to volunteers and committees, optimizes financial performance and oversees personnel. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors and is responsible for day-to-day operations and implementation of all the policies and initiatives of the organization and Board of Directors. The Executive Director reports to the twelve-member board comprised of property owners, merchants and representatives of the Village of Oak Park and the Oak Park Development Corporation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee recruiting, training, development, and evaluation of staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure that the organization is in compliance with all laws and guidelines governing nonprofit organizations and special service area (SSA) districts.
  • Participate in the strategic planning process with the board to ensure the organization has a long-range strategy.
  • Based on the board's direction and staff input, ensure that the organization has annual operations plan that is aligned with its strategic plan.
  • Oversee responsibilities of staff and volunteers regarding programs and special events and oversight of the community programs
  • Develop collaborative projects/partnerships with other community providers.
  • Maintain proper record keeping, ensure internal financial controls, and oversee the annual audit and payroll
  • Assist with development and management of annual budget.
  • Partner with the Village of Oak Park and bookkeeper to review and report all financial activities to the board on a monthly basis.
  • Coordinate and ensure proper SSA funding in collaboration with VOP and other organizations.
  • Function as the primary spokesperson for DTOP.
  • Attend Village meetings and represent the organization at other community events and venues.
  • Work with Marketing Director to create an annual communication plan that includes advertising and a social media strategy.
  • Approve the direction and design of ad campaigns for the DTOP website and app.
  • Participate in and support Board of Directors and committee meetings as appropriate.
  • Build and develop the Board, ensuring diversity of representation.
  • Develop the annual report.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an urban planning, business management, public administration, non-profit management, or a related field is required. Master's degree preferred.Minimum of 5 years professional experience including responsibility for a budget of at least$700,000 annually, non-profit governance, commercial district revitalization or commercial district management experience is required.Demonstrated knowledge of special service area (SSA) districts, non-profit management, economic development, and/or commercial district and place-based marketing is also preferred.
  • Polished communicator with excellent written, verbal and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to build consensus among complex, politically sensitive, and sometimes competing public and private sector interests and stakeholder groups.
  • Direct exposure to volunteer-driven organizations a plus.
  • A record of planning and supporting growth.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work well with and understand the service area and diverse population.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends.
