Description
Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Schedules and Services, the Transportation Specialist will provide train scheduling support using Metra’s scheduling software. Analyze schedules and delay information to identify opportunities for schedule changes. Design and maintain department databases and reports. Assist the district transportation officers with maintaining the efficiency of the day-to-day operations of the department. Prepare scheduling files used by Metra’s GPS, website, on-board announcements, and third party consumers. Ride trains to observe on-board personnel and provide feedback to district directors. Perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. This position requires flexible availability including early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays. It also requires travel throughout Metra's six county region, including Cook, Will DuPage, Lake, Kane and McHenry counties.

Candidates can expect salary offers that range from the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidate can consider their growth potential.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Transportation, Logistics, Computer Science, or Business Management OR in lieu of specified degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four (4) years in logistics/operations, preferably in railroading or transportation.
  • Knowledge of business computer user applications, particularly related to schedule analysis, data management and report production.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Skill in analyzing, collecting, evaluating, interpreting statistical data and maintaining records and files.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel throughout Metra's six county region, including Cook, Will, DuPage, Lake, Kane and McHenry counties.

Description:
The Service and Schedule Design Specialists collect and analyze run times, rail capacity, passenger loading trends, and GPS data to use in developing rail operating schedules. Prepare schedule changes to meet changes in rail capacity, construction requests, and conditions that could impact on-time performance. Use traffic modeling software to run “What - If” scenarios to aid in decision making for maintenance, special events, and rail improvement and planning projects that ensure minimum disruption to service. Perform periodic field inspections to ensure adequate scheduling and coordination of route operations.

  3. Experience conducting data analysis. 
  4. Experience working on multi-discipline projects that requires collaboration across different departments or agencies and presenting findings to diverse audiences. 
  5. Must have knowledge of business computer user applications, particularly related to schedule analysis, data management and report production. 
  6. Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, specifically in Excel (knowledge of formulas and using large data sets). Creating databases in Access is preferred. 
  7. Must have excellent verbal and written communication and analytical skills. 
  8. Skill in analyzing, collecting, evaluating and interpreting statistical data. 
  9. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. 
  10. Must be willing to travel within Metra’s 6-county region. 
  11. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends. 
Preferences:
Experience in Transportation Scheduling; modeling and simulation in the transportation industry preferred.
Experience using software modeling or GIS work preferred.
Experience using databases for running queries and building reports preferred.
Familiarity with Chicago's regional transportation system preferred.

Transportation Analyst

Summary of Duties
Reporting directly to the Senior Section Manager, Systems Planning, the Transportation Analyst will provide support for commuter rail planning, data/statistical/geographical analysis, data base development and reporting activities using a broad range of planning techniques from quantitative data analysis to qualitative issues oriented analysis. Produce maps and other graphics, both sketch style and publishable; assist with field work data collection and a wide range of rail planning studies; maintain data tables; assist with ensuring Metra’s compliance with changing federal Title VI (Civil Rights) and equity regulations. Collaborate with other departments to facilitate projects; provide analytical data and other support to Metra departments and outside agencies and represent Metra at regional committees and task forces. Perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
  • Must have Bachelor's degree in Urban, Regional or Transportation Planning, Geography, Economics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or related field.
  • Must have two (2) years hands on experience with at least one of the following: statistical and other quantitative analyses, geographical analysis, data management, or survey research.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Must have considerable knowledge of transportation planning, geographic information systems (GIS), and programming/scrip/macro languages.
  • Skill in graphic design is preferred.
  • Must possess excellent verbal, written, communication and presentation skills.
  • Must have the ability to read technical material.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
