The National Park Transportation Scholars Program gives transportation
specialists a unique opportunity for career development and public service.
The Scholars Program places transportation professionals, as well as
master's and doctoral candidates in the fields of transportation,
engineering, and planning, in National Parks across the country to assist
Park Service staff in developing transportation solutions that preserve
valuable resources and enhance the visitor experience.****

Assignments begin in late June and last 12 months. Each scholar will
receive a stipend of $50,000 for the 12-month assignment. Park projects
involve transportation planning and analysis, coordination with local
communities, environmental and traffic studies, and other
transportation-related tasks.****

*Who Should Apply*****

U.S. Citizens with substantial knowledge and expertise in transportation
planning or a related area are eligible to apply to become a National Park
Transportation Scholar. The program is open to graduate students and
transportation professionals who are 1-3 years post graduation.****

Recent Grads & Students: Econ. Dev. Travel Scholarship - APA

APA Economic Development Division Travel Scholarship

Submission deadline January 25

Applications are invited from Master's level students enrolled in PAB-accredited planning programs across the US, as well as individuals who have graduated from those programs in the last year. The $1,000 travel scholarship is awarded on the basis of a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and an original student paper or work. The original student submission should be 2,000 to 2,500 words and speak to practitioners about a substantive topic related to economic development and planning in the US. The scholarship will be presented at APA’s National Planning Conference in Chicago , April 13-17, 2013. The paper will also be published on the Economic Development Division website and distributed electronically to division members.

2012 Scholarship Winners

The 2012 Economic Development Division Graduate scholarship winners are Seema Adina, Kira Intrator, and Lindsay Reul of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for their joint paper "Wealth Creation Through Sustainable Forestry: Generating Wealth Creation Models in the Appalachian Wood Products Industry."

Their paper combines analysis of value chain and supply chain to identify strategies that would capture environmental and economic benefits for communities. The selection committee, consisting of David Bieri (Michigan), Shari Garmise (Association of Land Grant and Public Universities), Shana Johnson (Foursquare Integrated Transportation Planning), John Provo (Virginia Tech), and Greg Schrock (Portland State), appreciated their innovative approach. Among all the papers it stood out as an original synthesis of ideas in an accessible form for practitioners.

CN Railroad Scholarship: Transportation Concentration

One scholarship from CN Railroad is available to a UPP student who will be conducting a thesis research or a project related to rail freight transport. The student should be graduating in May 2013 or August 2013 to qualify.  It is desirable that the student has taken UPP560 and UPP561 but not required.

The scholarship will provide equivalent of 50% RA appointment for the Fall 2012 semester, and upon a satisfactory progress, Spring 2013 semester.
