Transportation Planner - Sam Schwartz

Job Summary

Sam Schwartz, a TYLin company, is seeking a full-time Transportation Planner to join a dynamic interdisciplinary team within the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Division of Project Development. The successful candidate will work as part of the in-house consultant team to advance CDOT’s priorities and planning efforts and help deliver robust Complete Street projects in Chicago. The candidate will support projects through various tasks, including data analysis, stakeholder coordination, and development of maps, reports, presentations, and graphics.

The successful candidate must be self-sufficient, organized, and able to communicate concepts clearly and concisely through writing and graphical representation. The successful candidate shall be able to understand larger project needs while successfully managing day-to-day project demands under tight deadlines. The candidate will report to the City of Chicago Department of Transportation offices and is anticipated to be full-time in-person. The candidate will report to the offices of the City of Chicago Department of Transportation (2 N. LaSalle Street Suite 1110, Chicago, IL 60602). Evening and/or weekend hours may be required to support public engagement events.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • Creating spreadsheet-based tools,

  • Reviewing and summarizing traffic crash information,

  • Data analysis and managing complex datasets,

  • Writing technical reports and memos,

  • Meeting facilitation,

  • Preparing supportive meeting materials and follow-up documentation,

  • Preparing high-quality graphics,

  • Developing presentation materials,

  • Reviewing transportation plans and drawings,

  • Conducting field observations,

  • Attending public engagement events,

  • Internal and external stakeholder coordination.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in urban planning, transportation engineering, or equivalent degree required

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to develop high-quality graphics to support communications materials.

  • Command of transportation and urban planning concepts

  • Understanding of Chicago’s active transportation plans and efforts

  • Knowledge of urban planning/transportation related datasets

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, MS Excel, GIS and analysis add-ons, such as Network Analyst and Spatial Analyst is required

  • Experience with data analysis through Python, R, or Tableau, desired
