Description:
Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

The Business Efficiency and Process Improvement Department is responsible for providing safe, efficient and dependable transportation to commuters on all Metra-operated lines: Milwaukee North and West, Rock Island, Metra Electric, SouthWest Service, North Central Service and Heritage Corridor and those lines operating under purchase of service  agreements: BNSF and Union Pacific. In addition to all employees directly involved in providing train service, The Business Efficiency and Process Improvement Department also oversees the Rules Department, Dispatching Office, Crew Management Center, Station Services, Customer Service, Ticket Services and GPS Center.

Reporting to the Manager, Service Design, the Schedule and Service Design Analyst 1, maintains databases and analyzes train operations data in support of the development and modification of train operating schedules. Design and maintain department databases and reports, and prepare scheduling files used by Metra's GPS, website, on-board announcements, and third party consumers. Generate data for use in analytical reports on ridership, on-time performance, and operating efficiencies. Assist in preparing schedule changes for special events, construction projects, and conditions that could impact on-time performance. Prepare maps, charts, tables, and photographs for inclusion in reports, response to customer inquiries, and dissemination of information to internal departments, external agencies, and customers. Participate in the Train Riding Inspection Program (TRIP) to observe employees in the performance of their duties which may include assessing train crew, ticket agents, and station services; recommend improvements, and ensure compliance with regulations and service standards. Works under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Candidates can expect salary offers that range from the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidate can consider their growth potential.

Requirements: 
  1. Bachelor's degree in Transportation and Urban Planning, or a related field or any combination of education and experience that equals four (4) years in transportation scheduling or planning.
  2. Some knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation planning and scheduling.
  3. Good analytical and organizational skills.
  4. Good verbal and written communications skills.
  5. Good math skills, specifically statistical analysis.
  6. Proficient in using Microsoft Office suite, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  7. Ability to analyze performance data, prepare reports, and make presentations.
  8. Ability to learn and use scheduling software.
  9. Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.
  10. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  11. Must be able to operate a vehicle.
  12. Must be willing to travel within Metra’s 6-county region.
  13. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
