We Will Chicago Promotion Capitan - Muse Community + Design

Job Title: We Will Chicago Promotion Captain
Employment status: Part-time, Non-exempt, Seasonal
Compensation: Hourly, $35
Hours: up to 24 hours/week

About
MUSE Community + Design is seeking outgoing, well-organized, and enthusiastic neighbors to
join our team as We Will Chicago Promotion Captains from July to October. Meeting
Chicagoans where they are, our promotion team will be a key part of this summer’s public
engagement for We Will Chicago, Chicago’s citywide plan.

We Will Chicago is the first citywide plan in more than 50 years, and the City of Chicago is
bringing the planning process to every Ward this summer. DPD will release a draft document in
July outlining the Goals and Objectives of We Will Chicago. Promotion Captains will be trained
to educate the public about the We Will Chicago framework and collect feedback. To learn more

As a We Will Chicago Promotion Captain, you will represent the Chicago Department of
Planning and Development (DPD) and the We Will Chicago planning process at events across
the city this summer and fall. Promotion Captains will provide logistical support to We Will
Chicago Promoters at events like street festivals, farmers markets, outdoor concerts, and block
parties. Promotion Captains will be responsible for transporting We Will Chicago Promotion
equipment and materials to events and ensuring Promoters are prepared for a successful
engagement.

This is a seasonal position, offering up to 24 hours per week.

Responsibilities:
  • Represent the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development (DPD) and We Will Chicago at assigned in-person events.
  • Transport We Will Chicago engagement equipment and materials from a storage facility located in Wicker Park to events and back.
  • Assist Promoters with setting up and taking down We Will Chicago engagement equipment and materials at events.
  • Coordinate with MUSE staff and Promoters to ensure a smooth event experience.
  • Take photos on your phone at events and deliver to the MUSE Community + Design team as requested.
  • Submit Captain event reports in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure Promoters submit event reports in a timely fashion.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Availability to work off hours and/or weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle to be used during shifts.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, bending, stooping, standing long hours, and lifting up to 40 lbs.
  • Communicate effectively with all people, regardless of ages, abilities, cultural groups, economic statuses, sexual orientation, and/or disabilities.
  • Comfortable speaking with strangers and in public.
  • Familiarity with the city of Chicago and its neighborhoods.
  • Comfortable travelling to and working in any neighborhood in the city of Chicago. We will do our best to assign Promotion Captains to events close to their home neighborhoods.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic technological issues on mobile devices like tablets.
  • Outgoing and energetic.
  • Manages Promoters at the assigned event; fosters a team spirit.
  • Prompt, punctual, and professional.
  • Access to internet and a device to complete weekly paperwork.
  • Works well in an unstructured and informal environment, with limited supervision.
  • Good at solving problems, thinking creatively, and self-motivation.
  •  Ability to take direction and to learn basic facts about urban planning and the We Will Chicago planning process.
  • Other duties as assigned
Preferred skills and experiences:
  • Fluent in English. Fluency in other languages such as Spanish, Polish, Mandarin, and American Sign Language highly preferred.
  • Experience working or volunteering in a community engagement role.
  • Experience in a customer service role.
  • Confidence driving and parking on Chicago streets.
Requirements:
Successful completion of a paid training course that covers We Will Chicago key elements,
public engagement best practices, media relations, cultural sensitivity, and conflict resolution.
