Urban Designer, Department of Planning & Development, Chicago

                                                           URBAN DESIGNER

DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT

Bureau of Planning & Design

Number of Positions: 2

Starting Salary: $73,644.00

Under direction, the position will provide urban design expertise to the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) and the Chicago Planning Commission (CPC) in the review of development proposals and the development of neighborhood plans, and perform related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

·     Conducts urban design plans, zoning, and land use studies including data research, conditions analysis, and making recommendations

·     Develops planning policy, design criteria, and design guidelines in coordination with agency staff and other City agencies

·     Serves as a liaison and department representative on urban design related matters with other City agencies, consultants, the general public, and developers

·     Leads and coordinates the design review of development projects with a focus on zoning analysis, site design, massing, architectural and landscape design

·     Participates in the departments’ internal design review committee and serves as a liaison for external review committees, such as the Chicago Plan Commission and the Committee on Design

·     Implements the department’s urban design policies, principles, and best practices

·     Clearly communicates verbally, graphically, and in written form the department’s city-wide land use and urban design policies as it relates to specific projects or plans

·     Prepares technical and illustrative drawings, physical, and digital models

·     Organizes and prepares graphic and written materials to be presented to the Chicago Plan Commission, Committee on Design, department staff, elected officials, public agencies, and the general public

·     Maintains a working knowledge of the City of Chicago zoning ordinance

Additional duties may be required for this position

Location:          City Hall, 10th Floor

Days:             Monday – Friday (occasional weekend hours may be required)

Hours:          8:30am – 4:30pm (occasional evening hours may be required)

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·     Graduation from an accredited college our university with a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a directly related field, plus five (5) years of urban design work experience; OR

·     Graduation from an accredited college our university with a Master’s degree or higher in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a directly related field, plus four (4) years of urban design work experience

NOTE: Applicants selected to interview will be required to submit a work portfolio at the time of interview

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

·     Previous experience working for a large municipality

·     Proficiency working with ArcGIS mapping and analysis

·     Proficiency working with specialized software including Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, and   AutoCAD

·     Previous experience creating and presenting in front of diverse groups of people
