JOB OPENING: HISTORIC PLANNER II

DUTIES STATEMENT

As a Historic Planner II, under the supervision of senior staff, performs tasks mandated by Ordinance 161-H relative to the designation of local historic districts, which may involve preservation planning, architectural survey, historical documentation, and photographic skills. This position will include supporting a variety of grant funded projects the department implements. Duties also include public engagement with community members and stakeholders on survey and documentation projects. The position will be working in a variety of diverse neighborhoods collecting oral histories, as well as addressing economic and racial equity in historic preservation.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 Responsible for assisting in public engagement efforts with community members, stakeholders, and residents;

 Responsible for assisting with the execution of grant funded projects, including the collection of oral histories, research, and writing reports;

 Responsible for assisting in the preparation of preliminary historic district study reports and their presentation to the Historic Designation Advisory Board;

 Assisting in the preparation of final reports and ordinances establishing historic districts for Board approval and submission to the City Council;

 Assisting in the preparation of legal documents such as ordinances and easements;

 Assisting in providing information to government agencies, developers, community organizations and residents on technical aspects of historic preservation, including incentives for rehabilitating historic buildings, such as tax credits, architectural facade easements, and other federal, state and local programs;

 Perform such other duties as required and requested by the Director and Deputy Director.

 

EDUCATION

Graduate of a masters, bachelors, or certificate program in historic preservation or a related field, such as history, public history, ethnography, or other related fields, is preferred for this position.

EXPERIENCE

 At least three years of professional experience in the field of historic preservation, history, public history, ethnography, or other related fields is required;

 Knowledge of the public history, ethnography, and/or the preservation of architectural resources, is preferred, but not required.

 Experience with public engagement including community members and stakeholders, is preferred, but not required;

 Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.

SALARY RANGE

The Historic Planner II position has an annual salary range of $47,000 - $59,000, plus benefits.

Candidates who can demonstrate Detroit residency will be given special consideration.

ABOUT THE HISTORIC DESIGNATION ADVISORY BOARD

The Historic Designation Advisory Board (HDAB) advises Detroit City Council on all matters regarding historic preservation to protect the historic, cultural, architectural, and archaeological resources that make Detroit unique. HDAB promotes preservation through the creation of local historic districts and design guideline ordinances and also serves as a general resource to the community. The office also maintains the City of Detroit’s status as a Certified Local Government (CLG). Through this program, HDAB implements a variety of National Park Service (NPS) and Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) grant funded programs.
