Assistant Planner - Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning

Who: Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning

What: The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is hiring full-time employees at the Assistant level in the Planning Department, with an emphasis on long range planning, multimodal transportation, governance, and/or land use and zoning. Some CMAP positions are contingent upon securing and retaining grant funding. Currently funding is secured for the Assistants positions through August 31, 2021, with the possibility to be renewed.

CMAP is our region’s official comprehensive planning organization. The agency and its partners are implementing ON TO 2050, a new long-range comprehensive regional plan to help the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois implement strategies that address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality-of-life issues. Position Purpose

Provide intermediate technical and professional support of CMAP’s long-range comprehensive regional planning, the Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, and research, data analysis, and mapping work to contribute to the agency’s long-range and local planning efforts. Planning projects may include intermediate level comprehensive plans, corridor or subarea plans, zoning revisions, studies of special topics such as housing or economic development, and similar planning activities. Research and analysis projects may include intermediate level GIS mapping, data processing, quantitative spatial analyses, and the development and documentation of new business intelligence tools and products, and methodologies for quantitative analysis.

Perform technical work researching, analyzing and writing technical planning documents and supporting public planning projects and initiatives, and related work. Contribute to other CMAP activities, including but not limited to the implementation of ON TO 2050, the agency’s general activities in policy, programming, and planning. Some in-region travel and evenings/weekends are required; candidates must have the ability and willingness to work with communities across the region.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Public Policy, Geography, G.I.S., Computer Science, Statistics, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree in Planning, Public Policy, Geography, G.I.S., Computer Science, Statistics, or a related discipline, some professional experience in planning, policy analysis, or related field is preferred. Multilingual preferred. The salary range available for this position is $45,900 – $56,919. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
