Multimodal Freight Planner - Tennessee Department of Transportation (closes June 4)

Who: Tennessee Department of Transportation

What: The TDOT Long Range Planning Division is seeking qualified professionals with a transportation planning background and a strong interest in freight planning and policy initiatives to complement TDOT’s strategic direction in order to further the department’s stated goals and values. The Multimodal Freight Planner serves as a team member within the Freight & Systems Planning Office and assists with development, implementation, and analysis of freight projects for the Long Range Planning Division. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintain knowledge base and familiarity with applicable national and state freight policies and trends in support of TDOT’s programs and objectives.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the State Freight Advisory Committees and participate in other public involvement and community outreach activities. 
  • Update and maintain the Statewide Multimodal Freight Plan and components of the plan. 
  • Provide oversight and management for freight projects, including research initiatives, to ensure that deliverables are met and that projects are completed on schedule and within budget. 
  • Research, compile, and analyze data on freight systems and supply chains to support freight planning and policy initiatives. 
  • Prepare written summaries and analysis of research, policy reports, and other documents for use at meetings and in reports for the Department. 
  • Prepare and deliver presentations in a professional setting to internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Develop detailed comprehensive reports on freight projects and tasks. 
  • Assist with the development and preparation of grant applications and requests for proposals (RFPs) to support freight planning projects and initiatives. 
  • Assist and participate in regular collaborative planning opportunities with the private sector, metropolitan planning organizations, cities, counties, and other state agencies.


Qualifications for this position include:

Strong interest and knowledge of multimodal freight transportation policies and trends.
Ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Demonstrated computer software proficiency using various programs from the Microsoft Office Suite and other PC-based applications.
