Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives Program Manager - Cook County Department of Environmental Control

Who: Cook County Government

About the Job & Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Director of the Department of Environment and Sustainability, manages environment and sustainability initiatives in the development, coordination, and implementation of various strategic plans and special projects. Coordinates all aspects of environment and sustainability programs, projects, and special initiatives from initiation through completion. Manages new initiatives and resource/tool development including grant writing. Promotes local, regional and strategic sustainability through the development, management and use of the Green Leadership Team and other local, regional and strategic initiatives. Coordinates oversight and technical assistance to sub-recipients or assisted business, local governments and residents. Participates in data collection and data submittal via the Set Targets Achieve Results (STAR) performance measurement initiative. Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree is required is
    (Must provide original college/university transcript at time of interview).*
  • Six (6) years of full-time professional work experience in environment or sustainability.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Business, Real Estate, Urban Planning, Public Policy, Public Administration, Environmental Sciences, Architecture, Engineering or Finance is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local incentives and grant programs for environment and sustainability. Knowledge of environment and sustainability programs , tools, and trends. Knowledge of marketing and outreach principles and procedures. Knowledge of potential/available revenue sources. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning and resource allocation Knowledge of the County's sustainability goals and plans.
  • Skill effectively communicating both verbally and in writing to internal departments and external agencies as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Skill executing project management concepts including managing and monitoring scope, schedule, and budget. Skill collecting, analyzing and interpreting data and applying it to major plans/and project proposals.
  • Ability aligning community and County's efforts/investments needs in suburban Cook County. Ability to analyze and provide a summary of program progress to the appropriate authorities for approval. Ability to set appropriate program and performance goals and facilitate goal accomplishment.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate and collaborate with others internal and external to the County. Ability to prioritize and multi-task given overlapping deadlines and required data inputs at various levels.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple assignments/projects with overlapping deadlines. Ability to supervise employees or/and consultants.
  • Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States’ territories and Canada must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at time of interview.
