Who: Brighton Park Neighborhood Council
What: Brighton Park Neighborhood Council (BPNC) is a community based not-for-profit organization that works with local residents to build their leadership skills and to explore issues impacting their lives and their community and work towards social justice.
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Resource Coordinator, the College Mentors will be responsible for working with 5th-8th graders. They will provide academic tutoring and mentorship to students and will work with students in a classroom, small group or one-on-one setting and provide assistance in academic areas. In addition, they will also communicate with teachers, school counselors, parents, and BPNC’s staff to discuss student’s grades, attendance, behavior, and post-secondary plans.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist students in improving academic performance through tutoring, check ins, and additional support
- Manage and engage with students (both during and after school)
- Interact and communicate in a supportive, respectful, and professional manner with students, parents, community members, and other staff members
- Listen to and offer professional guidance and encouragement to youth
- Perform accurate record keeping
- Facilitate workshops in a classroom setting
- Attend college field trips, workshops, and events
- Help support other BPNC initiatives
- Other related job duties as needed
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Youth friendly/positive attitude
- Must be able to pass a background check and fill out all required employment documentation
- Good communication with parents, students, and Resource Coordinator
- Any changes in the work schedule MUST be previously approved by the Resource Coordinator
- Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task-oriented, non-judgmental, clear sense of boundaries
- Ability to work in a variety of settings with culturally diverse families and communities and ability to be culturally sensitive and appropriate
- Temporarily remote position
- Must be available M-F 3pm-5:30pm
